Phthalates analysis

Phthalates are chemical compounds mainly used as plasticizers: they are additives intended to make plastic flexible. They are found in packaging, wall and floor coverings, plastic sheets and films, pipes, frames, toys and cables, among others. They are also used as solvents or fixing agents in cosmetics and personal hygiene products, but also in paints and varnishes, rubbers, glues, inks and pesticides. They can also serve as conductive substances for perfumes and other cosmetic products. Di(2-ethyl-hexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) is mainly used in the manufacture of PVC. Diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP) are most commonly found in baby toys.

Since phthalates are produced in large quantities, they are often present in high concentrations in the environment. Due to their applications, they are mainly found in the human body. This absorption probably occurs through skin contact or inhalation during the use, for example, of cosmetic and hygiene products, but also and above all through the mouth in the case of toys for babies and young children.
